A lot of people have a hard time changing. They have their beliefs about what is difficult about change, or they say it’s too hard, or it takes some amount of time to change. Everyone has their unique battles and strategies for making a change in their life. And for some people the change process is so daunting that they never even attempt it!
At the same time we all have experienced massive, radical change whether we expected it or not. Something happened to you, or somebody you love, and you instantly had to change something about your life. When looking at PET and CAT scans of the brain, when something changes (whether it’s a thought, a habit, a belief, a feeling) change happens instantly!
The two bedrocks and foundations for how we change are repetition and intensity. They are the only two ways in which we tend to change.
Repetition is constant; drip, drip, drip. You fall, you get up. When you do something consistently, over and over again, at the end of the day you won’t know when the actual change process got affected. You won’t know exactly when you stopped something and started doing another thing, but when you do it repetitively you will wake up one morning and just say, “I’m done! It’s here, it’s now! I get it!”
Intense change can happen from something painful. You could be totally safe in suburban America and get mugged in the parking lot of a mall, and you probably will not feel safe for a long time or maybe even ever again. Or maybe you get fired from a job and now you have to adjust from a steady paycheck and comfortable lifestyle to finding a new job and paying the bills.
It can also happen in a very pleasurable way. Women have 9 months to repetitively get ready to have a baby. The baby is always growing 24/7 and they feel the pregnancy and they are constantly getting ready for the birth. For a guy, it happens intensely because they don’t feel the pregnancy, they don’t have the repetitive process that the woman has. The moment the head crowns and the moment they see the baby held for the first time, they know they’re a father.
If you are trying to affect change, the easiest and most effective way is to figure out the repetitive and intense tools to do it. When you are building your change and transformation process, you have to include repetition and intensity. It will make it far easier for you to change and create the life that you want.
