The power of labels has been documented over and over and over again. When someone buys into their label, they will do everything in their power to perform according to the label.
One of the most poignant studies on labels was done in the late 80’s when AIDS was a very fearsome diagnosis and we didn’t know much about it. We thought that AIDS could be caught just by breathing the same air as someone who had it. There was an over-positive/false-positive test created for AIDS because they didn’t want to miss anybody. So they actually broadened the test protocol so that anybody that remotely fell into the arena got a diagnosis (and label) of “you have AIDS.”
Within 10 years, after they knew more and had more correct test protocols, they went back and redid a lot of those old blood samples. They went looking for those people that had false positives and do you know where they found over 90% of them? In cemeteries.
Here’s what’s really trippy, do you know what they died of? AIDS. They died with AIDS symptoms but they never had the disease.
The power of the human mind when it believes its label is well documented.
Labels, or identity statements, are the easiest way to reprogram, and consciously maintain the programming, of who you really are. You are doing this today – it’s just unconscious. It begins with two words: “I am.” Think about that, feel that … I am. In neural programming terms, it is the single, most powerful, self-programming tool that you have. When you say “I am” or the command is implied – “I am” – whatever follows, really becomes a law, it becomes fact, it becomes a reality.
Obviously if you say “I am a Caucasian” or “I am Hispanic” or “I am Asian,” you’re not going to wake up tomorrow, and be a different race or a different gender, or something different from that. But what if you say “I am lazy” or “I am a procrastinator” or “I am not good” or “I am terrible” or “I am… whatever” Think of your negative habits, think how the “I am” is implied in those identity statements. You become the negative habit. And it becomes very difficult to break that as a pattern, not because the pattern is hard to break, but because the identity command that you’ve programmed with over the years, becomes hard to break. But we’re not trying to break the habit – when we break the identity command, the new habit will follow.
So let’s play with it, let’s see what it looks like.
If I were to ask you, to give me an identity command around your health or finances or your parenting, you might say something like, for health “Oh, I’m not in great shape.” For money, you might say “Oh, gosh, I’m always losing money,” or “I better be careful, I lose money easily,” or “I better be careful or the planet will take money away from me.” And embedded in those commands are the “I am” statements of who you are – “I am not good with money,” or “The planet is better at taking money away from me than I am at keeping money.”
What if, when I asked about your health, you said, “I have an amazing immune system!” Now is that true or false? If you’re alive I’ll tell you what – you got an amazing, immune system, even if you’re sick. Because the fact that every day your body’s assaulted by germs and viruses and toxins, and your body, without command, without thought, without consciousness, is constantly cleaning and fighting and growing and healing and rejuvenating, you do have an amazing immune system. But when was the last time, your identity was “I have an incredible, magical, amazing immune system that I’m totally in love with”? Because if all you focus on is “Oh, I’m overweight,” or “I’m not in great shape,” your brain will not create great conditioning or it will not release fat, in a mind/body connection, unconsciously, because you have said over and over again “I’m not in great shape. I’m fat.” When you look at these command structures “I am” takes on great power. “I am an amazing immune system” becomes a powerful new identity, and now your weight begins to shift and your health and conditioning begins to shift.
If we look at money and say “Money is always flowing to me! I just ask for it, and it happens,” some of you are going to say “Well, wait a second, Bill – that doesn’t happen for me.” But I’m going to challenge right back at you, and say, when’s the last time you made the statement? When was the last time you held the identity, that you are abundant? That you tap into the potential of the universe, the potential of the planet, to give you money? Why does it give you money? Because you ask for it, and you believe in it, and you’re a great person that deserves money.
Many of you today that struggle with money, and struggle with finances, have more identities created around “I’m poor, I’m fighting my bills, I’m this person that’s not rich,” and then you sit there and say “Well, I’d like to be rich someday.” Well, when do you program yourself to be rich? You don’t. So it begins with the identity statement process.
You have to change how you talk about yourself, and then, it’s easy to change who you are. Yesterday you were consciously and unconsciously programming an identity, generally built on an old program that you learned from your family at a very young age. Now, you can say “You know what? I am going to program that I do have an incredible immune system. I have great health, and I release excess weight. I am a magical parent. Oh, I occasionally do some stupid things, but hey – that’s kind of a fun part of me.” And the benefit that not only you get, but your children get, because now their programming is, “Identity statements are powerful” … that is probably one of the greatest things that you can give them to help their self-esteem and self-awareness … programming them to owning, growing, and healing, owning big adjectives.
So in the chicken and egg position, change your reality or change your identity, it doesn’t matter. Change one, they both change. But it’s far easier to change your identity. Listen to your current identity commands, and change them to be empowering and helpful for you.
